“The Steward of the Stewards”

The mission of AFSCME Local 3336 is to act as the “stewards of DEQ’s stewards” of the environment.  This stewardship includes advocating for working conditions, pay and benefits; supporting political activity that promotes pro-environment and pro-labor positions; building stronger labor coalitions that further the rights of all workers; and targeting Union resources to critical issues identified by the membership.

Advocating for working conditions, pay, and benefits so workers can focus on their environmental work.  This advocacy includes:
  • Contract negotiations
  • Labor/Management Meetings
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Grievances
  • Direct action/rallies
  • Protecting professionalism in the workplace
Being politically active at all levels.  This political activity is to support positions that are pro-environment and pro-labor and includes:
  • Participation in labor organization political action committees (e.g., Council 75 PAC, direct actions such as JwJ, CBLOC, Alliance for Sustainable Jobs, etc.)
  • Education about/involvement in ballot measures
  • Education about/involvement in electoral politics at the local, regional, state, and federal levels
  • Contributing time, money, and effort to causes identified and supported by members
Building stronger labor coalitions to further the rights of all workers.  A stronger labor organization is a more effective one; strength can be gained by:
  • Increasing Local membership to 75% or greater
  • Recruit and train stewards and leaders
  • Improve internal communication
  • Forming coalitions with other Locals, Council 75, Regional Labor Organizations, JwJ, etc.
Targeting other issues where Union resources will be directed.  Such issues will be identified by the membership but might include:
  • Health Care
  • National Energy Policy (including drilling in ANWR)
  • Anti-labor Ballot Measures
  • Anti-environment Ballot Measures
  • Pro-labor, pro-environment ballot measures and candidates
